As an undergraduate student, Alicia Anderson juggled athletics and academics with great success! She was a tutor and had the opportunity to work on instrumentation for SPICA, an infrared space observatory scheduled to launch as early as 2030, with Dr. David Naylor in the Department of Physics & Astronomy. Alicia is now a masters student in physics and astronomy at the University of Lethbridge.

• Independent Studies: I have completed 4 independent studies in total. 2 of them in psychology, and the other 2 were in Neuroscience
• I have been involved in both Animal & Human research
• My independent studies included topics related to human sexuality, brain anatomy and, tactile stimulation and its impact on Alzheimer’s disease
• Independent studies were some of the coolest experiences of my university journey

“Strive for the courage to get to know your professors! Either through office hours, after lectures, or through independent or applied studies; this is what really helped me progress to where my goals were academically. It also opened the door to many other areas, like research opportunities (honours thesis). What makes my uLethbridge experience unique?

• I’m a third-generation student (my mother and my grandmother both completed their degrees at the U of L) and I was curious to know how my experience would compare to their own
• At the end of my first year, I ran for the position of Arts & Science Representative for the University of Lethbridge Student’s Union (ULSU) and was shocked when I was elected to one of the six positions
• With the university’s philosophy of Liberal Education, I’ve taken several classes outside my major. An Epidemiology class prompted me to add a minor in Population Health
• Over the summer, I was truly honoured to study in Dr. Robbin Gibb’s Lab at the Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience via an Applied Studies course
• My uLeth experience would not be complete without the dedicated and inspiring educators I’ve had the privilege of studying under; I would sincerely like to thank Dr. Robbin Gibb and Professor Jennifer Burke for inspiring me to feel excited about my future in education and research as well as other educators at the U of L who have inspired other students’ yearning for education

• Research: I am a member of the U of L’s Research Internship Concentration (RIC) that has provided me with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience conducting undergraduate research within the biological sciences

• Liberal Education: My experience as a TA for the Liberal Education 1000 class for the past two years has provided me with invaluable teaching experience. My love for sharing knowledge and liberal education has undoubtedly sprung from this opportunity

• Job Opportunities: the U of L has provided me with many funding opportunities to conduct research and work with knowledgeable professors such as Dr. Elizabeth Schultz and Dr. Theresa Burg throughout the summers

• Participating in competitive programming has been an extremely fun and productive way to learn. I would never have known I had a passion for computer science if I had not joined the competitive programming team. Thanks, Howard!!!!
• Working on research projects during the summer with professors. I had a lot of fun this summer working on research projects with Amir Akbary and Joy Morris. I also learned so many things that I could not learn in a class setting about my subject and also what Mathematics research is like.

• Winning the Chinook Summer Research Award to do research on the history of the Model U.N. in Canada with Dr. Kristine Alexander during the summer of 2019

• Working with the Institute for Child and Youth Studies (I-CYS) as an undergraduate affiliate

• An applied study that allowed me to work with the Galt Museum and Archives on a trail-blazing exhibit on queer history in Southwestern Alberta

• Travelling to Toronto and London, England to present at queer history and childhood studies conferences on the exhibit at the Galt and other queer history research I had undertaken with another student

• Absolutely supportive and encouraging professors in the Departments of History and Women & Gender Studies, as well as I-CYS who have provided me with opportunities and connections I never could have dreamed of

What makes my uLethbridge experience unique?

• Amazing teachers that are there and have time to help; I broke my ankle in the spring and the teachers had flexible hours to help out, and for one lab I was able to finish in the summer because I was on crutches

• Independent studies are amazing because you get the experience of working in a lab, but you also get the course credits for the work you put in

• Housing was very accommodating and was able to get me into a room in UHall last minute for the last month of the semester after my ankle surgery

• The ULeth Swing Dancing group has been a great evening activity and a time to learn something new!

• My rock climbing level has increased substantially in the last year with such easy access to a wall; the regulars there are amazing people and it’s easy to spend a few hours there a week

• I have worked on campus at the Sport and Recreation Customer Service Desk since I transferred here in my third year, it has been a great way to meet other students and staff around campus

• I volunteered on campus planning the 2019 Annual Yoga Rave and will be volunteering again with the upcoming 2020 Yoga Rave

• I completed an applied study with Victim/Witness Services to gain hands-on experience

• I have been working on an independent study with Bryan Kolb for the past 3 semesters looking at the relationship between handedness and recovery from concussions

• If an opportunity arises, I always say yes even if it scares me: for example, after taking several courses with my favourite professor, Louise Barrett, I asked to do an independent study with her, she then invited me to join her graduate-level reading group; as nervous as I was the first class, it pushes me to think more critically and continue to improve my writing skills

• With guidance from my professors, I have had the opportunity to attend multiple conferences and workshops relevant to the environmental field

• I have successfully completed both an independent study and an applied study in my area of interest

• I am currently doing a co-op with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, working in environmental chemistry

• I was the first student to work on and present the University of Lethbridge Campus Ecology project, which is a project that aims to re-introduce native prairie species on campus, as well as to create a more sustainable campus

• Following advice from professors, a U of L advisor, and staff, I’ve been able to explore my passion for both science and the liberal arts
