November may not generally be known as the month of love, but the United Way and the University of Lethbridge would beg to differ.

November marks the annual United Way campaign on campus and the theme this year is local love.

“What does local love look like? How can you show your local love? It is all about how we can, together, make our community a stronger, safer and more resilient place to live and flourish. It is about making sure that we stay connected to our community and give back,” says Cameron Howey, community development coordinator for United Way of Lethbridge & South Western Alberta.

The U of L has traditionally been a strong partner and supporter of the United Way’s efforts, and its impact in the community is tangible. Those wishing to participate in the campaign are able to sign up for direct payroll deduction or by visiting the United Way website.

“United Way is the only charity in Canada allowed to do direct payroll donations,” says Mike Whipple, director, Office of the President. “Throughout the campaign, employees pledge to donate an amount which is then deducted from their pay cheques throughout the year. This system works quite well come tax season, with their tax receipt already tied into their information.”

Those participating can choose to designate their donation to any registered charity in Canada. However, the local chapter of the United Way urges a strong local interest through its Community Fund. This fund is specifically dedicated to local agencies, enabling them to continue much needed services and maximize local impact.

The Community Fund’s pillars are Poverty to Possibility, Healthy People and Strong Communities, and All that Kids Can Be, supporting both Lethbridge food banks, Woods Homes, MS Society, John Howard Society and more.

What can local love do?

- A $250 yearly donation feeds 125 school children
- A $600 yearly donation provides three individuals support to address addiction, employment, housing, and re-connecting with society after leaving the justice system.

Visit the United Way to make a donation or fill out the U of L direct payroll deduction form to support the many local agencies that make Lethbridge a supportive and caring community.
