Shoplifters (Manbiki kazoku万引き家族) (Japan, Hirokazu Kore-eda, 2018)
A non-biological family in a Japanese suburb relies on shoplifting to make ends meet. One freezing evening, day-labourer Osamu and young Shota find their 5-year-old neighbour, Yuri, abandoned outside her home. The family takes Yuri in, and when they find signs of abuse, they decide to keep her. The lines between theft and survival, kidnapping and rescue, are increasingly blurred when Yuri is reported missing by a social worker.
