"In "Some ideas about warmth.", many concepts I’ve explored through discreet collaborations and site-responsive projects have begun to cohere within an open system of sculptural work. In undertaking this project, I seek to honour day-to-day practices domestic and emotional labour — the connective tissue holding our selves and our communities together, alive and intact.
"During my two-month-long residency at Medalta I will create modular ceramic objects, using hand-building and slip-casting techniques. Modular structures will be built by stacking, nesting, and interlocking individual pieces of ceramic dish-ware — plates, cups, mugs, bowls, serving platters, pots for plants — forms I have chosen to produce because of their connection to everyday practices of life-giving."My material preoccupation with containers, vessels and protective membranes is rooted in my engagement with processes of healing and community care, as much as in experiences of physical and psychological fragility, near-fatal trauma, sexual assault, gender dysphoria, and dissociative panic attacks.
"I conceive of my residency project as an adaptable ecology of component parts, through which I hope to affirm an embodied approach to art-making, and an investment in upholding values of impermanence, contingency, adaptability, empathy, and vulnerabilities."
sophia bartholomew (b. 1987, Toronto, Canada) is a queer non-binary femme and an interdisciplinary artist. Their practice is rooted in processes of reciprocity and unknowing — cycling through physical layers, membranes, endurance, protection, genuine care, absurdity, and exhaustion. They studied visual art and theory at UBC in Vancouver, and are currently based between Fredericton, New Brunswick and Montreal, Quebec.
Since 2012 they have developed site-responsive projects for The Khyber Centre for the Arts (Halifax), The New Gallery (Calgary), The Confederation Centre Art Gallery (Charlottetown), sometimes art space (Havana), Saltbox Festival (Cornerbrook), M:ST Festival (Calgary), The Vancouver Art Book Fair (Vancouver), Third Space Gallery (Saint John), Faucet Media Arts Centre (Sackville), Galerie d’art Louise-et-Reuben-Cohen (Moncton), The Crying Room (Vancouver), topdown bottomup (Vancouver), Roadside Attractions (Toronto), The City of Calgary’s public art program, Water Cooler Gallery (Calgary), and Connexion Artist-run Centre (Fredericton).
Currently they are undertaking a ceramics residency at Medalta in Medicine Hat.
