For the last decade, Heather Rowland has been a dedicated resource for students both within and outside her role as a counsellor in the counselling and career services team in Student Services.

Heather has been pivotal in ensuring the University of Lethbridge is a leader in supporting and informing the campus community about preventing sexual violence and maintaining healthy relationships. As Chair of the Preventing Sexual Violence Action Committee (PSVAC), Heather shows inspiring guidance and enormous respect for not only the people involved in this integral committee but also for the highly sensitive and often traumatic nature of work involved.

Through her commitment to ongoing education, Heather has ensured she has the skills and ability to be an active advocate for the University at departmental, institutional, community and provincial levels all the while never losing site of the crucial connection with the students in her care. Heather has been instrumental in ensuring student-service providers have the resources and training to help their peers in times of crisis, specifically in the Women’s Centre and for Residence Assistants.

Many will meet Heather because of her vocation, but most will remember her for her empathy, her kindness and for being the voice they needed to hear most in a time of difficulty.

For these reasons and countless more, the University of Lethbridge is proud to award Heather Rowland a President’s Award for Service Excellence.
