The University of Lethbridge School of Liberal Education presents Edward Snowden

This event is from the archives of The Notice Board. The event has already taken place and the information contained in this post may no longer be relevant or accurate.

Edward Snowden is a US citizen, former Intelligence Community officer and whistleblower. In 2013, Snowden leaked classified information and documents from the National Security Agency without permission. The leaked information revealed numerous global surveillance programs, many run by the NSA and the Five Eyes Intelligence Alliance with the cooperation of telecommunication companies and European governments. These revelations generated unprecedented attention around the world on privacy intrusions and digital security, leading to a global debate on the issue. The US government laid charges against Snowden of two counts of violating the Espionage Act of 1917 and theft of government property. He has been living with asylum status in Russia since 2013. Snowden's story has been told in the award-winning documentary, Citizenfour and motion-picture film, Snowden.

The U of L is partnering with the University of Winnipeg and Brandon University to bring Edward Snowden to campus, virtually of course, on Tuesday, May 9 at 5 p.m. for a lecture on the state of cyber security and surveillance. The evening will include a question and answer segment with Snowden and will be moderated by Dr. Harold Jansen (Political Science) with a reception sponsored by Southern Alberta Council on Public Affairs (SACPA) to follow.
