The Discovery Lecture Series presents

"Reason in an Age of Unreason: Why Liberal Arts Education Matters More Than Ever"

We are told, repeatedly, that never has so much information been available so quickly to so many in the history of the world, and that technology is the key to everyone's future. What this cliche leaves out is the difference between information and
genuine knowledge, and adeptness at digital technology does not enable us to make this crucial distinction, and may even impede our ability to do so. That is the job of liberal arts education: to make sense of the flood of unfiltered information (ranging from the ridiculous to the sublime) that places so many demands on our attention that, in our current culture of distraction, we are literally left with no space and time to think.

A lecture by Susan Jacoby

American writer, author of Freethinkers: A History of American Secularism and The Age of American Unreason.
