Surrounded by his loving family BERND EBEL went home to be with his Lord on Monday October 2, 2000, after battling cancer with grace and courage,
Bernd was born in Crivitz, Germany, July 23, 1942. He escaped to the with his mother through Berlin two weeks before the Berlin Wall was erected in 1961.
After undergraduate studies at the University of Hamburg, Bernd was awarded a scholarship to study at the University of Alberta where he met his future wife Maureen. They married in Germany in 1967 and Bernd immigrated to Canada where he completed his Ph.D. in Economics at the U of A. Bernd taught for 2 years at St. Mary's University in Halifax before accepting a position at the University of Lethbridge in 1974.
Bernd loved life and lived it to the fullest. He took delight in his garden, music, bird watching (with a special love for owls) and exploring the countryside with his Airedale, Kaiser.
Bernd had a passion for his adopted country Canada and a deep affection for his country of birth, Germany.
Bernd was especially proud of being a founding member of the London Road Neighbourhood Association. It wasn't unusual to see him running through the neighbourhood.
He will be cherished and loved forever by his wife Maureen and his children Martin and Anna (fiancé Hon Lam). Also grieving his loss are his mother Margarete, sister Gertrud (Robert) and brother Karl (all of Hannover), in-laws Patricia and Robert Haney, of Banff and mother-in-law, Laura Fiddes, of Calgary, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Bernd was predeceased by his father Carl Jr.
A Funeral Service was held on Thursday, October 5, 2000, in ST. AUGUSTINE'S ANGLICAN CHURCH, 411 - 11 Street South, Lethbridge, with Reverend James Robinson and Pastor Alfred Maier officiating.
