In the spring of 1875 Col James F. Macleod decided to construct a fort in the Cypress Hills and that June "B" troop under command of Inspector James Morrow Walsh commenced building.

With the coming of the railway in 1883, Fort Walsh ceased operations and the post was moved to the rail line at Maple Creek.

Now rebuilt Fort Walsh is a National Historic Site
