Was his only claim amongst the general public
that of being an eccentric?
No, not really. He was known for his generosity. He encouraged working people
to visit the area of the park called the Grotto where he provided tea and entertainment.
He often thought of those who were at work in mills and would invite them
to enjoy the open space in his estate on Sunday. He also made special arrangements
with the West Riding Lunatic Asylum in Wakefield for patients to visit.
