What was Waterton's greatest achievement?

This was the nature reserve he established at his home at Walton Hall. Here at the birthplace of the industrial revolution he was surrounded by a countryside being quickly destroyed. In contrast he established a large area where birds and animals were protected and encouraged.

No wonder he was considered eccentric. He dedicated most of the second half of his life to managing this pioneering venture. Today, we would describe it as a nature reserve. Today, he would be in tune with the times.
