Ecuador is struggling through tough economic times which saw it default on its debt in 1999 and post the highest inflation in Latin American three years running. Only about 25 percent of Ecuadoreans seeking work hold a full-time job. As a result many are leaving the country for "greener pastures" where they can make considerable more money and send it back to their family.
These people with the proper papers are applying to Spain.

Others just leave.
