New awards available to students

The University of Lethbridge is boosting the amount of award money available to new students.

A total of 17 new awards are available for students who apply to the U of L by March 1.

This year, the U of L is already offering more than $2.7 million in student awards and bursaries, but students who commit by March 1 to attend for the 2009 academic year can be eligible for up to $85,000, including two, four-year, full-tuition awards valued at approximately $20,000 each ($40,000 total); five awards of $5,000 each geared to high school, transfer or post-diploma students ($25,000 total); plus 10, $2,000 relocation awards ($20,000 total).

Why? The answer, according to U of L President Bill Cade, is simple.

"At the University of Lethbridge, we believe education is an investment and we want to help with tuition," Cade says. "We're asking students to think about where they see themselves in four years, and we're investing to help get them there."

Cade adds that at the U of L, classes are small, professors are leading researchers, tuition is affordable and the opportunities students gain from studying in more than 150 degree and program options prepares students well for their future – whatever that may be.

"We are incredibly fortunate in Alberta to have so many excellent post-secondary institutions. In the southern part of the province, the University of Lethbridge has devoted the last 42 years to carving a niche and delivering a world-class educational experience," Cade says.
"But the educational landscape across the province is changing, and the U of L is no exception. While maintaining our tradition in undergraduate liberal education, the University of Lethbridge is confirming its place as a leading comprehensive academic and research institution. Put simply, this means we will stay true to who we are and continue doing what we do very well – fostering a personal, supportive learning community; ensuring professors are inspired scholars who integrate research and creativity with teaching; and delivering relevant programs that are meaningful and useful to our students."
