Janzen wins 2011 Spelling Bee

It took five hours, 29 rounds and the word "abhorrence" to crown the 2011 Postmedia Canspell Spelling Bee winner -- 11-year-old Amy Janzen, a student at R.I Baker school in Coaldale.

Janzen outlasted 36 tough competitors from all across southern Alberta to win a $5,000 scholarship, a trip to the national finals in Toronto, and several other gifts, including books (and the cool hat) from the U of L Bookstore, Gift cards from the Lethbridge public Library, and more.

The U of L has been a sponsor of the event since its inception five years ago. The U of L judging and host team, as well as members of the U of L Literature Club also participated in the Lethbridge Public Library "Mini-bee" event geared to children in grades 1 - 3 which took place Feb. 5.
