Horns golf teams headed to national championship tourney

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns golf teams look to cap a successful season this week, teeing it up at the Canadian University/College Championships at Morningstar Championship Golf Club in Parksville, British Columbia.

A total of 20 men’s and 12 women’s teams will compete for both team and individual titles beginning Tuesday. After the opening three rounds, the field will be trimmed to the 10 lowest scoring men’s and six lowest scoring women’s teams. Any individual within 15 strokes of the lead will also make the cut for the final round.

For team scoring, the best four of five players’ rounds will count for the men’s competition, while the three best scores of four will account for the women’s team scoring.

This year was a breakout season for the Horns women’s team, winning the team title in four of the five tournaments they entered. The Horns won tournaments at the University of Alberta, University of Calgary, the Alberta Cup, and here at home.

Lisa Reid and Katie Benoit led the way for the Pronghorns this season. Reid had four second-place finishes and Benoit was one spot behind Reid in all four tournaments. Both were also named to the All-Albertan Team as top four players in Alberta. Erin Lee and Emma Degenhardt round out the team for the national tournament.

On the men’s side, the Pronghorns had a second-place finish at their home tournament and three third-place finishes. Individually, David McMullen was the top performer with one win, one second place, and a fourth-place finish and was named to the All-Albertan team as a top five player in Alberta. He however will not compete in Parksville after graduating from school and moving on.

Matt Richot, who was the Horns top finisher at the University of Victoria tournament, Brett Sheridan, Ben Taylor, Matt Taylor and Mitch Taylor will make up the men’s side in Parksville. Sheridan’s top finish this season was fifth at Calgary’s tournament.
