Operational Changes
(until further notice)

As the University of Lethbridge works toward a gradual and safe reopening of its facilities, Horns Recreation is pleased to announce the 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport & Wellness will reopen on Monday, March 8 at 5:30 a.m. in a limited capacity. We look forward to welcoming our members back to our facilities. 

The Government of Alberta moved into Step 2 of their COVID-19 Reopening Plan on March 1, easing restrictions on indoor fitness. This announcement allows us to reopen our facilities; however, currently only low intensity workout activities are permitted. Time slot bookings will open on Saturday, March 6 ​on our Community Programs website at

Other operational changes will include:

  • MASK use is REQUIRED by all participants at ALL times (even during your low-intensity workout)
  • ALL cardio equipment in the Fitness Centre & on the Indoor Track is NOT accessible
  • ONLY walking is permitted on the Track level
  • ONLY free weights, strength/cable machines & stretching area is open for use
  • Physical distancing requirement of three metres between all users/participants.

* We will continue to monitor the easing of restrictions and reopen these facilities when applicable.

Hours of Operation & Procedures

Each person will need to book a time slot in advance to allow for control of numbers in the facility and allow for necessary cleaning between users. Once they’ve completed their workout, members will need to leave the facility in a timely fashion to allow for cleaning. Time slots are spaced 30 minutes apart to allow the equipment to be sanitized.

Facility Hours of Operation will be as follows:

o   Monday to Friday - 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

o   Saturday – 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

o   Sunday – 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.


Membership Options

With some amenities and facilities remaining unavailable, Horns Recreation fully acknowledges that the easing of restrictions in Step 2 may not meet everyone’s fitness preferences. Please contact our staff in the Customer Service Centre with any questions you may have regarding your membership options.


Programming Update

There are a number of Fall 2020 programs/activities that were suspended as of mid-November. Each registrant of our fall programs will be contacted via e-mail for information on either how to recieve a refund or further details regarding extending their program/activity into March 2021.

Face Masks

Masks are required in all areas of the University of Lethbridge, including Horns Recreation facilities.  MASK use is REQUIRED by all participants AT ALL times (even during your low-intensity workout).

Registration for all of our Community Programs, including Private Swimming Lessons, will open starting March 1, 2021 at 7:00am. Private Swim Lessons will be available with certain restrictions to follow provicincial COVID-19 guidelines. For more information, please click here > 

The Athletic/Recreation Services (ARS) Fee is mandatory for the majority of students (Full Time & Part Time) during the Fall and Winter Semesters.  The ARS Fee is shared between Horns Athletics & Recreation, and is integral to the continuous functioning and operation of:

  •  The Centre for Sport & Wellness & Stadium (e.g. maintenance, equipment replacement, staffing);
  •  Programming (Intramurals & Fitness); 
  •  No charge entry to all Horns Athletics Home Games;
  •  Continued development of on-line options for Student wellbeing (e.g. streaming fitness classes, E-Sports);
  •  Ongoing operations of the Pronghorn Teams and Competitive Clubs (basketball, soccer, track & field, swimming, rugby, golf, ringette, curling, softball).

We will be offering digital programs and content for those students who will not be in Lethbridge for the Spring semester as well. Visit for additional information.

  • Lockers that were set to expire on February 28 have been extended to April 30, 2021. 
  • Lockers that were set to expire on April 30 have been extended to August 31, 2021. 
  • Locker rentals (including those with towel service) will be available again when we reopen.

For the moment, there is no determined reopening date for the steam rooms. Similar to other facilities and programs, we will explore reopening these facilities when we enter Stage 3 of Alberta’s Relaunch Strategy.

Change rooms and showers are now open with limitations to promote proper physical distancing. You’ll have to wear a mask in the change rooms, but can utilize the showers as long as you are able to maintain an appropriate physical distance from other facility users.
