COVID-19 STUDENT FINANCE FAQ

Below are some frequently asked student aid questions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Please consult this page frequently as it may be updated accordingly.

 

Financial Help

The province of Alberta has made available the following supports. Please see the following for more information.

  • Alberta Emergency Financial Assistance: for unexpected emergencies
  • Alberta COVID-19 Supports: Education property tax freeze, Utility payment deferrals, tax changes, student loan repayment deferrals
  • Protections for tenants: tenants cannot be evicted due to non-payment of rent, no rent increases, late fees cannot be applied to late rent payments for the next three months, payment plans made between landlord and tenants should be made during public health emergency
  • Food Bank Support: the Province of Alberta has committed funds to support food banks across Alberta in their food supply efforts. Please click here and here for Lethbridge food bank information.
  • City of Lethbridge: on-going pandemic support is provided here, such as social supports, utility deferrals, amenity updates
  • Lethbridge Community COVID Support: this page provides information on Help Seeker, a site that provides a comprehensive list of what services and supports are open and available
  • Banks - we encourage students to consult with their banking institution for possible supports available

We recommend that you frequently check your provincial government’s websites for information.

Canada has implemented the COVID-19 Economic Response plan that supports individuals and businesses. Initiatives such as the Canadian Emergency Student Benefit (CESB - available in May), Canadian Emergency Relief Benefit (CERB), Employment Insurance sickness benefits, Indigenous Support, and Canada summer job program changes might be able to help you during this time. We recommend frequently checking this site as support continues to evolve.

We understand the possible financial impacts that students might be incurring due to the COVID-19 situation. All students, domestic or International who are experiencing immediate short-term financial hardship and who’ve exhausted all other options may be eligible for the University of Lethbridge Emergency Bursary. Please email awards@uleth.ca, with subject heading Emergency Support to receive an application.

Spring 2020 Special Grading changes - CR/NC/W Questions

If you choose to participate in the CR/NC option, this will have no impact to your current student loans. For specific questions, please email fin.aid@uleth.ca for assistance.

A late withdrawal past May 1, 2020 will have no impact on your current student loans.

Loan lenders are filtering large call volumes, please exercise patience and kindness. If you have made numerous attempts and feel your need is urgent regarding your loan, please feel free to email us at: fin.aid@uleth.ca.

For continuing undergraduate students and for the Fall 2020 award cycle only, the following amendments have been made for award considerations in response to the University of Lethbridge’s special grading options:

  • Extension of the undergraduate Scholarship Awards application deadline to May 15th, 2020.
  • For award purposes, the award GPA will be calculated on all University of Lethbridge courses completed in the fall and spring terms of the previous academic year. Courses designated ‘credit’ can be used toward the minimum credit hour requirements. Candidates opting into the CR/NC special grading options, will need to complete a minimum of 18.0 credit hours (credit or graded), with at least 12.0 of those credit hours being graded.

Student Loans

Yes. The summer timetables are published and you can apply for loans as you normally would. Please note, as this evolves changes to timetables might be necessary. We are monitoring this to ensure there is as minimal impact to student loans. If you have questions regarding full-time status for summer loans, please email fin.aid@uleth.ca.

Confirmation of loans will begin mid-April for summer funding. Funds will be released on or after May 1. If you have an urgent question, email fin.aid@uleth.ca and we will respond as soon as possible.

Please do not worry. Apply for summer student loans as you normally would. We are monitoring the situation and can advise you specifically when timetabling decisions are final.

Student Aid Alberta will typically release the 2020-2021 student loans in early June.

Scholarships and Awards

We are aware that final grades and transcripts may be delayed. Please do not worry. The University of Lethbridge has extended the document deadline for entering students to September 15th, 2020. We will be continuously monitoring student’s eligibility throughout the summer and during our award adjudication. If you have a specific concern, please email awards@uleth.ca

The deadlines for awards applications (via the Bridge -> Student -> Apply for uLethbridge Scholarships, Awards and Bursaries) are:

  • March 15th – if you are a high school student entering the University of Lethbridge for the first time without attending any other post-secondary school
  • May 15th DEADLINE EXTENSION – if you are a continuing uLeth student or are returning after an absence without attending any other post-secondary school
  • May 15th – for entering or continuing Graduate student
  • June 15th – if you are a Transfer student entering the University of Lethbridge for the first time after attending another post-secondary school

 

We are aware of the continuous efforts being made across campus to adapt to the on going adjustments being made for students and their programs. If your practicum is unavailable for Fall 2020 and you do not enrol in classes at that time, any award you may be eligible for can be deferred. If you receive notification from our office in August that you have been selected to recieve an award, please email awards@uleth.ca and request that this is deferred until Spring 2021, when you are enrolled in your practicum. Be sure to include your name, student ID and explanation of your situation.
