Russ was born December 29, 1928 in Spedden, Alberta and lived his childhood in that area. He pursued his interest in history and aspirations for education, first by receiving his B. Ed from the University of Alberta, and later achieving his Masters and D. Ed from the University of Oregon. He also received an honourary D. Laws from the University of Lethbridge in recognition of his part as one of the founders of the University. His Alberta career began when he became a teacher in a one-room school, and he quickly accelerated through the Alberta education system eventually earning the role as first acting President of the University of Lethbridge, where he then served as Dean of Education. His long and successful career in Educational Administration, with a specialty in teacher education also included work in Tucson, Arizona; Victoria, BC; Kingston, Jamaica; & Georgetown, Guyana, and received awards from numerous international education organizations.

Russ met his wife, Evelyn, during his first year of teaching. They wed in 1955, and together they raised their family while living in Alberta, Oregon, and Arizona, and then BC, where they’ve lived since 1975. The entire family continues to reside in the Greater Vancouver area.

Russ’ intelligence and integrity were well balanced with his kindness and sense of humour. Russ placed family above all else and he will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and professional colleagues.

Russ and Evelyn have been active in the United Church wherever they lived, most recently at Colebrook United. A Celebration of Life service will be held at this church at 5441 125A St, Surrey BC on Saturday, October 10 at 1pm.
