Friday, February 19, 2021 - 12:00 - 13:30

Cultural conflict in the paradigm shift from healthcare provider-centered care to patient-centered care in the care of the elderly

February 19, 2021 at 12:00 pm MST

Topic:  The global population is aging and there is a focus on the care of the elderly.  In healthcare delivery globally, there is a shift from healthcare provider-centric to a patient-centric management approach. This demands that patients are partners in clinical decision-making as evident in developed nations. In Nigeria, the patients’ voice particularly that of the elderly is often neglected in clinical decision making because of the cultural perspective of the healthcare provider as the major stakeholder in decision-making. This perspective is honed when the elderly patient is stereotyped not to ask questions about clinical decisions. This presentation brings to the fore cultural conflict in the care of the elderly in Nigeria as compared to that of developed nations.
