University condemns inappropriate messaging

This notice is from the archives of The Notice Board. Information contained in this notice was accurate at the time of publication but may no longer be so.

Over the past few days, there has been commentary on social media regarding an anti-Semitic message that was posted by another user to the wall of the personal Facebook page of a University of Lethbridge faculty member.

The U of L is unequivocal in condemning any communication that promotes hatred, discrimination or violence against any individual or group.

The University, of course, cannot control what users do and say on social media channels, however if we discover that such vile comments have come from a member of our University community, that individual will be subject to the appropriate disciplinary measures available to us. Further, if they are deemed to be hate-speech, as defined by the criminal code of Canada, we would support and fully cooperate with an investigation by the appropriate authorities.

While we value and vigorously protect academic freedom, we do not believe that it is an appropriate response or should be a convenient shield for those who engage in illegal hate speech, or promote such discrimination and violence.

Sincerely,

Mike Mahon, PhD
President & Vice-Chancellor
University of Lethbridge
