Discussions are ongoing regarding the amount required for mandatory supervisor contributions to this award. Final details will be communicated as soon as possible.

The Office of Research & Innovation Services (ORIS) is now accepting applications for summer studentships in the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities, and health research. These studentships are meant to provide undergraduate students with experiential learning opportunities that complement their academic studies in a specific discipline. Summer research opportunities are available through the following agencies:

SSHRC USRA

The University of Lethbridge SSHRC Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRAs) aim to encourage research and advance training of undergraduate students in all disciplines. The program facilitates research advancement by providing students with a suitable research training experience with a University of Lethbridge faculty member who has an ongoing research program.

The SSHRC USRA is valued at $5,625 for the duration of sixteen consecutive weeks at 35 hours of work per week. It is expected that the funds requested in each competition will exceed the funds available.

NSERC USRA

The NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA) are meant to nurture your interest and fully develop your potential for a research career in the natural sciences and engineering. They are also meant to encourage you to undertake graduate studies in these fields. If you would like to gain research work experience that complements your studies in an academic setting, these awards can provide you with financial support through your host university. NSERC encourages qualified Aboriginal students to apply for this award.

The NSERC USRA provides a nontaxable stipend of $4,500 for the duration of sixteen consecutive weeks at 35 hours of work per week. The faculty supervisor provides a top-up to the NSERC portion.

AI Summer Studentship

The Alberta Innovates (AI) program, previously known as Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research (AHFMR) and Alberta Innovates - Health Solutions (AIHS), funds the AI Summer Studentships. This is an opportunity for diligent students with superior academic records to participate in medical or health research in Alberta during the summer time. The aim of the award is to encourage the pursuit of formal training and career in health research.  It is expected that the funds requested in each competition will exceed the funds available.

The AI Summer Studentship is valued at $1,500 per month for a minimum of two months to a maximum of four months of full employment within the months of May to August of each year.

Chinook Award

The Chinook Summer Research Awards aim to encourage research and advance training of undergraduate students in all disciplines. The program facilitates research advancement by providing students with a suitable research training experience with a University of Lethbridge faculty member who has an ongoing research program.  It is expected that the funds requested in each competition will exceed the funds available.

The Chinook Summer Research Award is valued at $5,625 for the duration of sixteen consecutive weeks at 35 hours of work per week.

For more information and full application requirements for the opportunities listed above, please see the ORIS funding database. Deadline to apply is February 12, 2018 at 4:00 pm.

Note - Effective October 1, 2017, the Office of Research and Innovation Services requires that faculty members are required to supplement the summer studentships to adhere to current Alberta minimum wage requirements. Because these awards are now considered employment income by the Canada Revenue Agency, Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and Employment Insurance (EI) costs also need to be included. Please see the Notice Board for more information on this decision.
