Mentor for Incoming Students
(Part-time student opportunity)

University of Lethbridge Enrolment Services is seeking ten (10) highly motivated, energetic and passionate current U of L students to join our dynamic, creative, collaborative, and data-driven team. From the moment of application to the end of first year, Orientation and Transition (O&T) programming assists the U of L’s newest students and their families.

Under the direction of the Coordinator, Orientation and Transition, you will be the face of our orientation and transition programs. You will be assigned a group of students to support and mentor via phone, email and in-person. You will be a role model and someone they look up to and trust. You will share your personal experience, provide a current student perspective, and connect them with the services, departments and opportunities they need.

Expected workload

  • March & April | Training session on Saturday, March 21 (up to 8 hours), after which you will connect with your students and introduce yourself (up to 8 hours over a two-week period).
  • May–August 28 | Over the summer, your students will email you their questions; you will provide any support, assistance and reassurance they require. This position is designed to be flexible enough to fit with your summer plans, regardless of job, travel, location etc. The workload is expected to be 4–8 hours per week. A major O&T event will take place on June 6 (on-campus) that you are expected to work (up to 8 hours).
  • August 31–December 14 | You are required to be back on campus on September 5 for training and to participate in new student move-in day (September 6) and New Student Orientation (September 7 & 8). Once the semester begins, you will be expected to work 10 hours in-office per month. In addition, you will continue to respond to new student emails, as well as facilitate activities that will introduce them to the campus and city throughout their first semester.

Supported by the Enrolment Services office, you will be provided with the necessary knowledge, resources, and training — including how to give campus tours. As a student mentor, you will gain valuable personal and professional skills including leadership, event planning and execution, time management, workshop development and so much more.  You will meet new people, get involved and build a sense of community on campus.

If successful, you will be a member of our team from March 21, 2015 to December 14, 2015. You are required to take courses and on campus during the fall semester. There will be an opportunity to continue with the team until April 29, 2016 — if you continue to be a current student in good academic standing and your academic schedule allows.

Strong communication and customer service skills, written and verbal, and a high level of professionalism are of the utmost importance. You can effectively work as an individual and in a group. At times, evening and weekend work will be required.  This position is open only to current University of Lethbridge students in good academic standing and who will be registered as a full-time student in the Fall 2015 semester.

If this position sounds like it was made for you, please email a creative and passionate cover letter and resume to inquiries@uleth.ca. Deadline to apply is Wednesday, March 4.
