SAFE DISPOSAL OF GLASS AND SHARP MATERIALS

In order to reduce the risk of injury by sharps, the following should be considered for proper waste disposal methods:

  •  Any sharp object that is discarded into garbage cans has the potential for injury.

  • Do not inadvertently discard sharp objects; be aware of what you discard.

  • All sharp items, (i.e. broken glass, metal, light bulbs, etc.) should be boxed or bagged separately and labeled so that the Caretakers and others are aware of the hazard.  In addition, you may also call Caretaking at 329-2060 to provide notification.

  • If you have large quantities of refuse for disposal, contact Caretaking (329-2060) and you will be provided with a disposal cart.

  • Glass disposal boxes are available for use in laboratories.  Contact Caretaking (329-2060) to make arrangements for this service.
  • Sharps, such as scalpels or needles, may also present a biohazard and must be disposed of in appropriate disposal containers.  Please contact the Biosafety Officer (332-4484) for disposal of these items.
