University of Lethbridge President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Mike Mahon addresses issues surrounding the recent United States executive order.

--

The University of Lethbridge fully shares the concerns expressed by Universities Canada and other Canadian universities and organizations about a new executive order that prevents individuals from seven Muslim-majority countries to enter the United States for 90 days.

Our University was founded on values of accessibility, diversity and inclusivity. Since being established 50 years ago, the University community has constantly illustrated its commitment to these values. Our key mission is, "We exist to build a better society." Our absolute belief in this mission means that the University will continue to welcome those from around the world who seek us out in an effort to improve themselves and their communities.

Internationalization is a theme that is woven throughout Destination 2020, our shared strategic plan. The U of L’s international activities pertaining to recruitment, teaching, research and multiple other initiatives have greatly enhanced the campus experience for all members of our university community and southern Alberta as a whole. We also know it has benefitted global communities. The U of L is extremely proud of this.

In the same week this order was signed, the University community celebrated the Syrian refugees families who now call Lethbridge home and how their presence has enriched us all. It was a celebration of diversity and served as an important reminder of the strength of an inclusive society. Conversely, Canada was also reminded of the terrible consequences of societal divisions as we witnessed the tragic events unfold in Quebec.

We are part of a global academic community that not only encourages international students to attend the University of Lethbridge, but also recognizes the absolute value of students and faculty seeking experiences abroad. We further appreciate the necessity of the free exchange of ideas and collaboration across borders and are very concerned with actions that limit these opportunities.

In any way it can, through student, faculty and staff supports, the U of L stands ready to assist those who are affected by these recent developments in the United States.

President and Vice-Chancellor
Mike Mahon, PhD
