The Parkland Institute is proud to announce its award winners for 2018.

Faculty Research Award Recipient: Dr. Tiffany Boulton (Equitable Access to Midwifery Care in Alberta)

Dr. Boulton’s proposed research embodies Parkland Institute’s ethos on a number of key principles, including access to quality health care and ensuring equity for marginalized populations including women, Indigenous peoples and rural and northern communities. The potential for expanded midwifery services to provide safe, positive maternal and post-natal health care for Alberta alongside cost savings and systems efficiency suggests that this issue will continue to be on the political agenda in the future. Dr. Boulton’s timely research fills a considerable gap in the current landscape of health policy and will no doubt have significant implications for how midwifery care is prioritized in Alberta.

Graduate Student Award recipient: Amberlea Parker (An Oral History of Gallows Humour Among the Kainai Blackfoot)

A unique and intriguing topic of research, Amber Parker’s research on the use of humour among the Kainai Blackfoot offers a rare opportunity to shed light on a long-marginalized history. This important work captures the essence of the TRC’s Calls to Action by placing Indigenous history, culture, perspectives and voices at its centre. The committee was also impressed by Ms. Parker’s perseverance and dedication to her academic studies, as well as her commitment to social and political causes and determination to create progressive change in Alberta.
