October 2015 Fine Arts Kudos Report!

 

MUSIC

  • Rolf Boon’s (Music) electronic work System 2.3/7 was broadcast on CJSR Edmonton on Oct. 1 during the Avant-Grade and Beyond show hosted by Piotr Grella-Mozejko.  On October 13, Rolf’s composition Ten Miniatures were performed by Bente Hansen (Music) at the U of L Music at NoonSeries.
  • Max Hopkins and Alex Bohn received the 2015 Joyce and Ron Sakamoto Prize for Research in the Digital Audio Arts. Recipients are awarded a prize of $5,000 to fund their research over a period of eight months and must present their findings in the form of a presentation or composition.  Complete story available online here.
  • The Fernie Friends of Opera invited the 25 members of the U of L Opera Workshop, under the direction of Dr. Blaine Hendsbee, to perform a gala concert on Friday, October 23 at 7 pm at Mountainside Community Church.

 

DRAMA

  • Three Mudfoot Theatre artists (and U of L alumni) - Geneviève Paré (BFA - Dramatic Arts ’11), Ian McFarlane (BFA - Dramatic Arts ’10 and Ryan Reese (BFA - Dramatic Arts ’13) – presented a talk on October 6.  They shared their insight and experience as creators and performers of Hudson Bay Epic, which played in the Sterndale Bennett Theatre from October 6-10 (presented by New West Theatre).  Ian and Genevieve also talked further about the epic behind The Epic with U of L News.
  • Shelley Scott (Associate Dean, Faculty of Fine Arts) has published an essay titled “Sharon Pollock and the Scene of the Crime” in a new collection, Sharon Pollock: First Woman of Canadian Theatre, edited by Donna Coates and published by the University of Calgary Press.
  • Thumbs Up Good Work Theatre presented HEXEN (written by Calgary playwright Caleigh Dingwall), a spooky outdoor play about witches, nature, and the messages and warnings between humanity… and other paths.  Featuring a cast including U of L Alumni, award-winning performances, and original music, the show ran from October 29-31 in the Lethbridge coulees.
