Assistant Professor – New Media (Web Design and Development)

The Department of New Media at the University of Lethbridge invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, commencing July 1, 2018. This position is subject to the approval of the Board of Governors.

An M.F.A. or equivalent terminal degree is required combined with a demonstrated record of creative activity and/or scholarly research in the area of web design and development, as well as demonstrated excellence in teaching. The successful candidate will have excellent web design and development skills including:

  • extensive experience in the creative exploration of emerging and integrated web technologies and specifications (e.g., d3.js, p5.js, Flexbox, etc.),
  • understanding of the web’s cultural, political, economic, and environmental implications
  • fluency in best practices and current W3C standards including responsive web design, HTML5, CSS3, Javascript and JQuery

In addition, expertise with hybrid mobile application development would be an asset.

The University aspires to hire individuals who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and research/creative activity, and have the potential to contribute actively in the Department of New Media and the Faculty of Fine Arts. Course assignments will be primarily undergraduate courses in web design and development, as well as other courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. These would include: (1) Web Design and Development, (2) the Dynamic Web, and (3) Advanced Web Design. Additional desirable attributes include an ability to teach (1) a foundational New Media introductory course, (2) the History and Theory of New Media, (3) and/or a special topic based on demonstrable proficiencies. Successful candidates will also be expected to serve in the M.F.A. New Media graduate program.

The Faculty of Fine Arts offers degree programs in Art, Drama, Music, and New Media within a liberal education context, and focuses on excellence in teaching and research/creative activity. The Centre for the Arts features outstanding equipment, facilities, and staff.
