ITS Network Upgrades

This notice is from the archives of The Notice Board. Information contained in this notice was accurate at the time of publication but may no longer be so.

What is this notice about?

IT Services is initiating a network upgrade across the campus.

When will this happen?

This work will take place in some areas of the campus soon and will continue over the next couple of years to the remainder of the campus

While the scheduling is not fully developed at this time, we will be upgrading equipment in University Hall, the University Center for the Arts, and Anderson Hall during the first phase of this upgrade.

Initial scheduling is as follows:

UHall E Section                                  Complete

UHall D Section                                  Complete

UHall C Section                                  Complete

UHall A Section                                  April 6 through April 16

UHall B Section                                  April 19 through April 30

University Centre for the Arts             May 10 through May 21

Anderson Hall                                     May 31 through June 11

This upgrade will then move into the other buildings and updated scheduling will be sent out as it becomes available.

Notifications regarding specific floors and sections during this upgrade will be sent out to users and groups based on room occupancy information in the campus directory. Please ensure this information is correct. If it is not, please submit updates via the University Service Portal.

Why is this happening?

When the Science Commons was built, we deployed new network technology in that building as the first step in a larger transition. The new technology features increased throughput, redundancy and enhanced security.

As much of the network equipment across campus has reached or is approaching the end of its supportable lifespan, we are now expanding the new technology across the rest of the campus network as time and budget allow.

How does it affect me?

While every effort will be made to minimize impact to our users, much of our network infrastructure is located in less-than-ideal locations and as such cannot be upgraded without removing the existing equipment first. Therefore, service outages during the upgrade may take 4 to 6 hours in certain congested areas and all wired and wireless network connectivity will be affected.
