     FIRE PREVENTION

Risk & Safety Services would like to remind everyone to please be aware of the following common Alberta Fire Code violations:

FIRE DOORS PROPPED OPEN – If you notice a fire door propped open in your area, please remove the door stop and ensure the doors are closed.

STORAGE OF MATERIALS TOO CLOSE TO CEILING – Storage of materials must be a minimum of 18” below the height of the sprinkler heads in order for them to work properly

MISUSE OF ELECTRICAL CORDS/POWER BARS – Frayed/damaged electrical cords must be replaced.  Power bars should never be plugged into an extension cord, but rather into a wall outlet.

POOR HOUSEKEEPING – Please ensure your areas are kept neat and tidy.  Excess storage of combustible materials can contribute to fire spread.

BLOCKED FIRE EXTINGUISHERS – Access to fire extinguishers must remain clear at all times.

BLOCKED ELECTRICAL PANELS – Access to electrical panels must remain clear at all times.

EGRESS IN CORRIDORS AND EXITS – Please ensure stairwells, aisles and exits are not blocked by articles stored in your area.

CHEMICAL STORAGE – Please ensure chemicals are kept in appropriate storage cabinets and segregated by hazard classification.

COMPRESSED GAS CYLINDERS – Must be properly secured by chains.

CEILING TILES – If you notice ceiling tiles missing, please ensure a Facilities work order is issued requesting they be replaced as the tiles reduce fire spread.

POSTERS/WALL COVERAGE – please ensure combustibles (e.g. posters) on walls does not exceed 20% coverage of the wall surface which can contribute to the spread of fire.

Thank you for doing your part in keeping our Campus Safe!
