Fine Arts Kudos Report - January 2016

Our faculty, staff, students, and alumni hit the ground running for 2016.  Not only that, one of our alumni has been tapped to participate in a major summer event, so mark your calendars!

 

MUSIC

  • Dr. Andrew Stewart (Music) was invited to perform his latest compositions for digital instruments at the 40th anniversary celebrations of the Faculty of Music at Wilfrid Laurier University January, 29-30. The Laurier New Music Festival was inaugurated in conjunction with the faculty anniversary.
  • Dawn Leite (BMus ’04) is among several U of L alums named to the Top 40 Under Forty list by the Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce.
  •  Jarett Jacobs (tuba) and Rachel Li (trombone), both music majors, participated in a nation-wide audition process and have been selected to perform with the National Youth Band of Canada, this May in Saskatoon.  The group, made up of Canada's outstanding 16-22 year old musicians, has the opportunity to work under the leadership of a renowned Canadian conductor and performs with a Yamaha Music featured soloist.

 

DRAMA

  •  Nicholas Hanson (Drama) and Shelley Scott (Associate Dean, Faculty of Fine Arts)  have articles in the latest issue of Canadian Theatre Review (#165 Winter 2016), on the theme of Equity in Theatre.  Shelley’s article is called “Feminism as a Marketing Tool: Calgary’s Urban Curvz.”  Nicholas’ article, “Equity and the Academy: A Survey of Theatre Productions at Canadian Post-Secondary Institutions,” was co-authored with Drama major Alexa Elser.  Both articles originated at a roundtable on Equity in Theatre at the conference of the Canadian Association for Theatre Research, in spring 2015 at the Congress of Humanities and Social Sciences.

 

ART

  • Kasia Sosnowski’s (BFA - Art ’14) exhibition of new work entitled Waste Land  is at Truck Gallery, Calgary from Feb. 5 through March 31.  Special reception: 12:18 am, Mar. 17.  While an undergraduate student, Kasia received of the Roloff Beny Photographic Award (2013) and after graduation completed a curatorial practicum and participated in an artist residency at the Banff Centre, AB.
  • Roy Caussy (MFA – Art ’15) is the only Lethbridge-based artist featured in the 10th Alberta Biennial in 2017, jointly organized by the Art Gallery of Alberta and Banff Centre’s Walter Phillips Gallery.  The exhibition open first in summer 2017 at the Walter Phillips Gallery and at the Art Gallery of Alberta on September 22, 2017, with public programming at both sites throughout the exhibition’s duration.
  • The annual Department of Art Faculty, Staff, and Grad Student Show, called For the Time Being, opened on Friday, February 6 at the Penny Building Gallery.  The Opening Reception included two special components: Action for Lethbridge, a performance by Tanya Doody, and a 3-channel video screening of For this Land by Jackson 2Bears with Janet Rogers.  Admission is free and everyone is welcome. The exhibition runs from February 6 – 26, 2016.
