Fall 2016 Course - North American Indian Art Studio (ART2350A)

This ART STUDIO course introduces students to both traditional and contemporary forms and practices of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit Art. We will focus on various individual artists and movements and consider the critical intent of the work as it relates to current affairs and important cultural, social and political issues in North America. Topics will include: assertions of Indigenous identity, the colonial context in Canada, contemporary Native perspectives in art, and performative strategies of creative resistance. Skills in critical thinking and analysis will be developed through in-class discussions, readings and presentations.

Credit Hours: 3.0

Recommended Background: One of Native American Studies 1000, Native American Studies 2300, or Art History 1000.
