In-School STEM Club Leader

Destination Exploration, the U of L’s leading youth science program, is seeking a part-time Youth STEM Program Leader.  This position requires someone with a high level of enthusiasm, a great deal of creativity and a passion for science & technology education.  The ideal candidate must be available to lead our in-school STEM club, which run on Friday afternoons from January to March 2018. As this club will run in local Lethbridge schools, the leader must possess a valid driver’s licence and vehicle. This is a great opportunity for a student to gain experience developing STEM education materials for grade 1-8 students and to gain practical program coordination and teaching skills. This club aims to promote gender parity in STEM.

Reporting to the Program Coordinator, the main duties of this position include the following:

Main Duties

  • Prepare weekly STEM club lessons for our Friday afternoon STEM club and document lessons in a weekly lesson plan to share with the program coordinator and parents.
  • Build database of STEM mentors for future club use.
  • Work with other staff members to coordinate activities and engage all club members.
  • Maintain club space and program materials.
  • Assist children with activities as needed and encourage a safe, team atmosphere.
  • Conduct program evaluation.
  • Ensure that all participants conduct themselves safely within a safe environment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current Standard First Aid (or proof of completion by January 12, 2018).
  • Clean current criminal record check (including vulnerable sector).
  • Experience working with school aged children.
  • A strong background or knowledge in a scientific or technology field.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting.
  • High aptitude for technology would be an asset.

This position reports to the Program Coordinator of Destination Exploration and will be required to work 5-10 hours per week at $15/hr.  Hours allocated to program planning are flexible but applicants must be available Friday afternoons 12:30 pm-4:30 pm.  Start date is January 12, 2018. Tech Maker Leader (2)

Destination Exploration, the U of L’s leading youth science program, is seeking a part-time Youth Technology Program Leader.  This position requires someone with a high level of enthusiasm, a great deal of creativity and a passion for technology education.  The ideal candidate must be available to lead our Tech Maker club, which runs on Fridays, 1:30 – 4:00 pm from January 26 to March 23, 2018. This is a great opportunity for a student to gain experience developing science and technology education materials for grade 3 – 6 students and to gain practical program coordination and teaching skills.  The main duties and minimum qualifications are summarized below:

Main Duties

  • Prepare weekly club lessons for our Friday afternoon tech club and document lessons in a weekly lesson plan to share with the program coordinator and parents.
  • Work with other staff members to coordinate activities and engage all club members.
  • Maintain club space and program materials.
  • Assist children with activities as needed and encourage a safe, team atmosphere.
  • Highlight the contributions of past innovators to electronics, computer engineering, and technology.
  • Conduct program evaluations.
  • Ensure that all participants conduct themselves safely within a safe environment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current Standard First Aid (or proof of completion by January 12, 2018).
  • Clean current criminal record check with vulnerable sector.
  • Experience working with school aged children.
  • A strong background or knowledge in a scientific field (preferably computer science).
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting.
  • High aptitude for technology would be an asset.
