Please join me in congratulating Dr. Andrew Hakin, Provost and Vice-President (Academic), on his appointment as President and Vice-Chancellor at St. Francis Xavier University, beginning July 1, 2020.

Andy has made an incredible impact at our University. Since arriving in 1989, he has served in many roles including assistant professor, associate professor, full professor, faculty association president, department Chair, associate vice-president (academic) and provost. In each of these roles, Andy has served the U of L with distinction. Our transformation to a comprehensive academic and research institution, the evolution of our teaching centre, the construction of Science Commons and the recommitment to our liberal education roots are just some of the accomplishments with which Andy has played a leadership role. In the years ahead, Andy will be remembered as a builder of our university.

While Andy will not officially assume his new role until this summer, he has informed me he will take a short administrative leave commencing tomorrow. To ensure continuity of operations at the University, I am pleased to announce that Dr. Erasmus Okine has agreed to serve as interim provost and vice-president (academic). Decisions relating to leadership in the Office of Research Services, as well as longer term plans regarding the position of provost and vice-president (academic), will be made in the near future.

We will plan an event for Andy later this spring so that our University community can express their gratitude and wish him well on his next challenge.

Sincerely,

Michael J. (Mike) Mahon, Ph.D
President and Vice-Chancellor
