With deep sadness, the University of Lethbridge extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Brock Hirsche, who passed away Sunday, April 8 at the age of 26.

Hirsche was diagnosed with testicular cancer in January, 2016. Initial treatments were successful but, unfortunately, the cancer returned in 2017.

“Our hearts and thoughts are with Brock’s family and friends,” says Ken McInnes, executive director of Sport and Recreation Services. “Brock was a tremendous young man with plenty of spirit and he was a joy to be around. He loved the game of hockey and was a role model for so many. His teammates and the rest of the Pronghorn family will miss him greatly.”

He returned to his hometown of Lethbridge after a career in the Western Hockey League with the Prince George Cougars, joining the Pronghorns men’s hockey team for its 2013-2014 season.

He was known as a leader and a warrior, battling shoulder injuries throughout his career. He was named captain of the team at the start of the 2015-2016 season, his third and last year with the Pronghorns.

In early March, Hirsche set up a scholarship fund, the Brock Hirsche Pronghorn Hockey Award, to annually support a Pronghorn men’s hockey player who demonstrates leadership skills and promotes men’s health issues. Already, the fund has raised more than $30,000. Anyone who wants to support the scholarship can do so at Brock Hirsche Pronghorn Hockey Award.

Anyone who would like assistance dealing with the loss of Hirsche can access support through Counselling Services at 403-317-2845 or through the U of L Employee and Family Assistance Program at 1-800-663-1142.

An obituary can be found online on the Martin Brothers website. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects between 6 and 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 12 at Martin Brothers Riverview Chapel located at 610 4 St. S. A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 13 at the Nicholas Sheran Ice Centre.

The U of L has lowered its flag in honour of Hirsche.
