The University of Lethbridge extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of former Board of Governors Chair and long-time University of Lethbridge and community supporter Philip M. North (LLD ’04), who passed away Thursday, April 30, 2020.

North, the founder of North and Company LLP, was the University’s third Board of Governors Chair, serving in that role from 1978 to 1984. He was a driving force behind the establishment of Pronghorns hockey at the U of L and continued to support the University as a donor, advocate and friend of our community. The University of Lethbridge recognized North with an honorary doctor of laws in 2004.

North served the legal profession extensively at a local, provincial and national level, including roles as Chairman of the Alberta Law Foundation, Chair of the Legal Education Society of Alberta, and President of the Lethbridge Bar Association. In recognition of his many contributions, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Law Society of Alberta and the Canadian Bar Association, Alberta Branch.

North gave generously to his community in leadership roles as President of the Lethbridge Rotary Club, Chair of the Lions Eye Bank (Alberta) Society, President of the Lethbridge Community Foundation, and Director of the Community Foundations of Canada. He was also active in the Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce, Lethbridge Minor Hockey Association, Lethbridge Easter Seal Telethon and the Canadian Association of Family Enterprise, Lethbridge Chapter. One example of his legacy is North and Company’s sponsorship of the U of L's annual Play Day family initiative.

More information will be posted when available.
