Condolence Notice — Lottie Austin

This notice is from the archives of The Notice Board. Information contained in this notice was accurate at the time of publication but may no longer be so.

The University of Lethbridge extends its sincere condolences to Professor Emeritus Dr. George Evelyn and the family and friends of Lottie Austin, who passed away on Monday, December 11 at the age of 60.

George and Lottie shared a love of music — Lottie was an accomplished pianist and George was Professor of Voice and director of the U of L singers in the U of L’s Department of Music for 26 years before he retired in 2009. In addition, they were dynamic supporters of southern Alberta and the U of L in particular.

George developed the Festival of Art and Song, a fundraiser in support of the U of L Singers. Lottie chaired the festival planning committee for many years and was key to its success. She was also the founding chair of the U of L’s Planned Giving Advisory Committee. In 2011, Lottie and George agreed to be co-chairs for Music in the Making, a fundraising campaign for the U of L Conservatory of Music in its new home at Casa, the downtown arts centre. The campaign raised funds for the pianos, stands, ensemble chairs and percussion equipment currently used by hundreds of Conservatory students. The campaign surpassed its goal thanks to their passion and hard work to rally supporters of the arts and the University.

The couple received the 2012 Senate Volunteer Award for their unwavering commitment to the U of L and the community. In 2016, George and Lottie received the Allied Arts Council of Lethbridge Joan Waterfield Memorial Award for their outstanding contributions to the community.

Lottie was also recognized as a YWCA Woman of Distinction and she was a finalist in the 2014 ProAm, the Honens Piano Competition for Amateurs.

A full obituary can be found on the Martin Brothers website.

A celebration of life is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 20 at Southminster United Church. In honour of Lottie, the U of L will lower its flag that day.
