The University of Lethbridge extends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of John (Jack) Foster, who passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at the age of 94.

Foster and his family have been dedicated supporters of the U of L for many years. His daughter, Margaret (Peggy) Mezei, taught clarinet for more than 25 years in the Department of Music. His son-in-law, Tom Staples, is a retired music professor and director of bands at the U of L.

In 1949, Foster created a legacy with the opening of a jewelry store now known as Foster & Sons Jewellers. Born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Foster, after serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force, worked briefly for the Canadian Pacific Railway. That brought him to Lethbridge, where he met Beatrice Livingstone, his future wife. After working at another jewelry store for a time, Foster struck out on his own and opened his own store.

Foster was generous with community causes and he joined the Masons, the Shriners, the Rotary Club and was involved in the Downtown Business Association, the police commission and Southminster United Church.

A full obituary can be found online at Martin Brothers Funeral Chapels. A celebration of life is being scheduled for next summer.
