The University of Lethbridge extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Leslie Dawn, a professor in the Art Department, who passed away on Sunday, Sept. 18.

Dawn came to the U of L as an assistant professor in the Art Department starting July 1, 1990. He received tenure in 1995 and became an associate professor in 2002. Dawn was promoted to full professor in 2014 and retired on June 30 of the same year. Dawn completed a PhD in art history at the University of British Columbia and was a critic of contemporary art.

He is described as a “superlative art historian” in the Southern Alberta Art Gallery e-newsletter on Sept. 22, and Jeffrey Spalding, a former U of L professor writing in Galleries West, describes Dawn as a “transformational western Canadian figure.” Spalding recalled how Dawn was central to the U of L’s visiting artist programs like Art NOW, how his art history classes pushed studio students to become better at their crafts and how his own craft helped advance art locally and much farther afield.

A memorial service will be held at SAAG, 601 3 Ave. S. on Sunday, Nov. 27 from 2 to 4 p.m. The U of L will lower its flag this weekend in honour of Dawn.
