The University of Lethbridge extends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Ian McKenna, a longtime professor in the Faculty of Management, who passed away peacefully at the St. Michael’s Health Centre on Monday, January 16 at the age of 73.

Born in Scotland in 1943, McKenna was a tenured Associate Professor who began his employment with the U of L in 1985. He taught a broad range of courses, including human resource management, management law, collective labour relations and collective bargaining. He also delivered workshops to students on the art of negotiating. McKenna retired in 2009.

"Over the years, in meeting, in discussion, in argument, in presentation, in celebration, Ian and I shared a common bond of respect, dedication and commitment to each other, to our colleagues, and to our students," says Dr. Bob Boudreau, dean of the Faculty of Management. "And I have never known anyone who was more passionate in his role as faculty member and more committed to his students' learning about the discipline of management. We will all miss his counsel, his wit, his kindness, his smile..."

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. (4 p.m. EST; 9 p.m. Western European Time) on Friday, Jan. 20 at McKillop United Church, 2329 15 Ave. S., with a separate memorial to be held later in his homeland of Scotland. The service will be live-streamed through McKillop. An obituary is available online and private condolences can be sent to the family through Martin Brothers Funeral Home.

In honour of McKenna, the U of L will lower its flag on Friday.
