Applications are invited from current members of the faculty of the University of Lethbridge for the position of Associate Vice-President (Research) and Dean of the School of Graduate Studies. 

The University of Lethbridge (U of L) is one of the leading comprehensive universities in Canada with a reputation for innovative teaching and research and a strong tradition of liberal education. To facilitate the continued growth of the U of L as a comprehensive university and as a vehicle for the continued development of the research profile of the institution, the U of L invites applications for the position of Associate Vice-President (Research) and Dean of the School of Graduate Studies (AVPR/DSGS).

The Associate Vice-President (Research) and Dean of School of Graduate Studies (AVPR/DSGS) position provides the necessary leadership to enable the U of L to advance the goals of the Strategic Research Plan, the Academic Plan, and the Comprehensive Institutional Plan and to provide leadership and support for all graduate programs and scholarship. The AVPR/DSGS will assist in the development and implementation of long-term strategy and planning functions for the Office of Research and Innovation Services and School of Graduate Studies that align with the strategic directions and goals of the U of L. With direct and secondary reports to the Vice-President Research (VPR) and the Provost and Vice-President (Academic), respectively, the AVPR/DSGS will be a member of the U of L’s senior leadership team and more specifically Statutory Deans’ Council, Provost’s Committee, and General Faculties Council. The AVPR/DSGS will participate and contribute to University leadership by working collaboratively within the senior leadership team to ensure the research and graduate programs are considered, expanded, and promoted, and that best-practices are applied to strategic, operational, and policy areas, as appropriate.

The successful candidate will possess a strong research and publication record, demonstrated leadership and operational abilities in administration, and extensive knowledge regarding university research, graduate studies and postdoctoral environments. The proven ability to work collegially and communicate effectively with the university community and with a variety of external constituencies is key to the success of the position.  The ideal candidate shall have obtained the rank of Professor.

The AVPR/DSGS will manage a broad portfolio, which will include the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Advance the mandate of the U of L as a Comprehensive Academic and Research University (CARU) by increasing research intensity and performance and providing oversight of and championing graduate programming.
  • Administration and institutional planning related to the research environment and graduate education.
  • Promotion of the highest standards of graduate education, scholarship, research, and creative activities at the U of L.
  • Relationship building within the U of L and at the local, provincial, and federal levels in all matters pertaining to graduate education and research.
  • Collaborate with the senior administrative team in supporting new ventures that will advance the graduate academic endeavor and research environments of the U of L.

The AVPR/DSGS will be responsible for representing and enhancing understanding of the research agenda and graduate programming on a variety of external and internal boards, forums and committees and will serve as the designate for the Vice-President (Research), as required.

The competition closes on November 4, 2019. Review of applications will begin on November 5, 2019.

The anticipated date of appointment is March 1, 2020.  The initial appointment term will be 5 years, subject to periodic review.
