Economic Development Lethbridge, with support from the Plant Protein Alliance of Alberta, Lethbridge College and the University of Lethbridge, is pleased to feature Dr. David Hughes – also known as Dr. Food – to speak about the future of food.

Dr. Hughes, Emeritus Professor of Food Marketing at Imperial College London, is the keynote speaker for The Food for Thought breakfast, which will also provide information from the College and University about their agriculture and innovation programs. Leveraging his global expertise in value-added processing and food marketing, Dr. Hughes will speak to how southern Alberta can take advantage of international trends and leverage its collective strength in the agri-food sector.

EDL Chief Executive Officer Trevor Lewington says, “Agriculture is a $110-billion per year industry in Canada and represents more than seven per cent of the national GDP, while in Lethbridge it is more than 15 per cent of our GDP. Canada ranks eighth in terms of exports, which leaves a huge opportunity for our region to fill.”

“For entrepreneurs and innovators, this is an excellent time to invest in value-added processing and highly technological means of creating efficiency and bottom-line wealth in our area,” says Dr. Kenny Corscadden, Dean for the Centre of Technology, Environment and Design at Lethbridge College. “We work closely with industry to create an environment where our students are able to thrive in this marketplace.”

David Hinger, Executive Director of the Teaching Centre & Agility at the University of Lethbridge, adds that “education, research, and innovation in agriculture, agribusiness, and agri-food will ensure our students are prepared for the growing opportunities in southern Alberta.”
