Making Sense of Local Food Systems: Perceptions, Concerns, Possibilities

This event is from the archives of The Notice Board. The event has already taken place and the information contained in this post may no longer be relevant or accurate.

Presenter:  William Ramp, Prentice Institute Research Affiliate, Director of UofL Centre for Culture and Community and Associate Professor of Sociology

Does Lethbridge have an integrated local food system in the early stages of development? "System" implies interdependence, communication, complementarity, mutual support, and infrastructure. How much of that is in place? Which necessary components still need to be built and integrated? What challenges and obstacles do local food initiatives face? What do we not yet know about them?

In 2014 and 2015, RA’s Katrina Kellner and Lorinda Peel asked questions like these of approximately 25 people engaged in local food production, distribution, consumption and policy, for a pilot research project directed by William Ramp and Trina Filan.  This project was funded by a seed grant from the Prentice Institute.

William Ramp will present initial findings and discuss how these may indicate ways to strengthen the local dimensions of food security and sustainability.

Moderator: John Usher, Prentice Institute Research Affiliate, Professor of  Management
