As part of ongoing efforts to enhance the services provided by Information Technology Services (ITS) Faculty and staff will be migrated faculty to Office 365 (O365).

“As you may recall, last year IT Services introduced Office 365 ProPlus for faculty, staff and students which provided Microsoft Office free—that was really our first foray into Office 365,” says Humphries.   “Based on the success of that launch, IT Services began exploring the adoption of the rest of the Office 365 features to further enhance and expand the services we offer.” Migrations will begin mid-August with the initial phase, followed by the migration of email and calendaring which is expected to be complete by the first week of September.  Additional adoption phases will be completed after that to help the campus community get to know the features of O365.

In order to prepare for this migration, a pilot project was completed with representatives from faculty and staff to review the O365 services.  ITS also worked with General Counsel and the Privacy Office to complete a legal review of the contract and privacy impact assessment (PIA).   “We took great care when setting up the Office 365 pilot project,” says Humphries.  “IT Services’ staff have all been using it since January, and we asked a number of faculty members and staff outside ITS to participate. With over 70 people participating in the pilot we have been able to identify and resolve the majority of issues related to migration, privacy and security.  Overall, it’s been a relatively smooth process,” Humphries says.

Faculty and staff representation from nine faculties, departments, and business units, was instrumental in completing a successful pilot project.  While IT Services took the lead on completing the PIA and drafting the Data Storage Standard, faculty and extended staff helped to ensure the diverse needs of the campus community were reflected in those documents.
