Art Student awards were presented this week, following the annual Art Department’s Open House, which invites the public to visit the U of L Centre for the Arts and view the array of artwork of every description and size, created by art majors over their year of study.
A total of 13 awards, which recognized excellence and commitment, were presented including a new one this year. The inaugural Excellence in Native American Art was presented to Grant Spotted Bull and Joel Cross Child. Grace Wirzba received both the Excellence in Printmaking award and the Art History/Museum Studies Gallery Award.
The SAAG Award, which recognizes outstanding involvement in the arts through volunteer work was presented to Morgan Bath. Graham Switzer received the David Lanier Memorial Award, presented by Ike and Diana Lanier in memory of their son David, for photography and photo-based work.
Other awards included: Recently Human Engineered Sculpture Award presented to Sarah Stringam and Monica Murray; Sam Loewen and William Austin received the ULSU Award for excellence in studio practice and commitment to community; Excellence in Digital Art Award was presented to Linda Shi; Elena Petzold received the Faculty of Fine Arts Award for excellence in studio production and breadth of engagement; Makaila Cline & Jenn Wood received the Excellence in Art Studio Award; Bianca Elke received the Excellence in Art History/Museum Studies Award; Wendy Jorgenson was presented with Studio Art Supplies Painting Prize and Tannis Ablonczy received the Trapdoor Artist Run Centre Award.
