Community Update - Sport and Recreation Services Review

This notice is from the archives of The Notice Board. Information contained in this notice was accurate at the time of publication but may no longer be so.

Over the past year, Sport and Recreation Services at the University of Lethbridge has been conducting a sport review of all levels of our programming. The review evaluated the areas of community programs, student recreational opportunities and Pronghorn varsity programs. The review has illustrated that our programs contribute significantly to the development of students, positively engage members of the University, and positively represent and engage the University and the community.

The focus of the review was to look at what Sport and Recreation Services needs to achieve excellence in programming at a time that requires a reduction in the operating budget of the University. The review was presented for final consideration to President’s Executive.

As we continue to study and finalize the scenario that will move the University forward, there is recognition of the value and importance of these programs to the students and community. In support of this, President’s Executive has indicated that the final scenario will have our current complement of Pronghorn teams remain in place. For this to be successful however, an increased expectation and better articulation of team performance, community engagement, participation, revenue generation and fundraising will be developed as a result of the sport review data and implemented over a three-year period. All Pronghorn varsity teams will participate in this process.

In the near future, we will share with the University and external communities a response to the recently-concluded review, including the accountability framework in which our teams will operate, as well as actions the U of L will undertake to move sport and recreation programming forward.

Dr. Mike Mahon
President and Vice-Chancellor
