Students Curate Professors’ Art

Tables turned when art students got to curate work by U of L Art faculty, staff and MFA students, and then develop an exhibition, which opens Feb. 6 at 7 pm in the Dr. Foster James Penny Building.

Entitled For the Time Being, the exhibition was curated by students in the Art History/Museum Studies degree program. “This provides students with hands-on, practical skills in planning and mounting an art exhibition, with the added twist of enabling them to curate their professors’ work,” says Dr. Anne Dymond, an art professor in the program.

“Inspired by Ruth Ozeki’s novel A Tale for the Time Being, the exhibition explores the idea that we are all connected in time by being here now; but we are also beings influenced by the theory of time that surrounds us,” she adds.

The student curators have been thrilled to participate in this unique experience.  “Learning how to put an exhibition together and about all the little details that go into the planning has been an amazing opportunity,” said Courtney Green, Art History/Museum Studies major. “Most students would never be given the opportunity to curate their professors. It is has been interesting to see how curators work with professional artists, and how artists work and think things through.  It’s also been good to be able to turn the tables and make decisions about our professors’ work!”

The exhibition runs until February 26 and is open Monday through Friday from 9 am to 4:30 pm.
