Talking About Teaching - The Politically Correct Classroom

This event is from the archives of The Notice Board. The event has already taken place and the information contained in this post may no longer be relevant or accurate.

We often hear the term political correctness, but what does it mean anymore? Does political correctness hold the same meaning it did a decade ago? Has it morphed into empathetic correctness? Are the boundaries of political correctness pushed and explored at this University and should they be?

The next Talking About Teaching will explore some of the circumstances that may arise regarding political correctness in the classroom, and the discussion will aim to provide insight and strategies to those struggling with those circumstances. Panelists will explore issues related to multiculturalism, indigenous cultures, the LGBTQ community as well as cultural competencies. What terminology, phrases or practices can cause personal discomfort to students and how can we do our best to navigate these occurrences? How are our current teaching practices exclusive or inclusive of specific cultures? What are some communication strategies for gaining better cultural competency? This is sure to be a vibrant discussion. All faculty members and graduate students are encouraged to bring their comments, questions, opinions, and insights to this great discussion. We look forward to seeing everyone on the 27th.

Snacks and refreshments will be provided.
