Talking About Teaching - Accommodating, Enabling or Empowering? A discussion about accommodations in applied degree programs

This event is from the archives of The Notice Board. The event has already taken place and the information contained in this post may no longer be relevant or accurate.

It seems more students are receiving accommodations such as taking exams in controlled, non-distracting environments.  Faculty members teaching in applied degree programs have begun to ask if such accommodations are the best way to support students. The accommodations we currently provide focus primarily on providing the best opportunities possible for our students to be successful while in university, but do they also help them be successful in their chosen careers following graduation? This is an especially important question to ask when their chosen careers may place them in high-stress and potentially chaotic work environments within which they are responsible for providing care to vulnerable populations (e.g., nurses working in emergency rooms or recreation therapists working in secured dementia care units). At our next Talking About Teaching, we would like to have a discussion aimed at expanding our ideas about the best ways to accommodate, support, and empower students in applied degree programs.

Speakers will include Sienna Caspar(Therapeutic Recreation) and Shannon Spenceley(Nursing).

All faculty members and graduate students are encouraged to attend.
