Social Inequality and Sports Participation in the 'Pay for Play' Society - Dr. Richard Gruneau

The Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education at the University of Lethbridge is very pleased to host Dr. Richard Gruneau as our Hart Cantelon Distinguished Scholar for 2018. The keystone of Dr. Gruneau’s visit will be a public talk, entitled ‘Social Inequality and Sports Participation in the 'Pay for Play' Society’, taking place on Thursday, April 5 at 7:30 p.m. in PE250 (1st Choice Centre for Physical Fitness). The talk will discuss Dr. Gruneau’s mapping and analysis of changes in sport organization, participation, celebration, and support, as reflected in opportunities and participation amongst Canada’s youth and adults. Light refreshments and a toonie bar will be available. The bookstore will be establishing a ‘pop-up’ shop at the talk as well, featuring several of Dr. Gruneau's recent books. Everyone is welcome.

Richard Gruneau, professor in the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University, has written widely for over 35+ years on the topics of social and cultural theory, political economy, media and popular culture. His numerous books include Sport and Modernity (2017); Mega Events and Globalization: Capital and Spectacle in a Changing World Order, co-edited with John Horne, (2016); Artificial Ice: Hockey Commerce and Culture, co-edited with David Whitson, (2006): The Missing News: Filters and Blind Spots in Canada’s Press, co-authored with Robert Hackett, (2000); Hockey Night in Canada: Sport, Identities, and Cultural Politics, co-authored with David Whitson, (1993); Class, Sports and Social Development (1983/1999); Popular Cultures and Political Practices (1989); Sport, Culture, and the Modern State, co-edited with Hart Cantelon, (1982); and Canadian Sport: Sociological Perspectives, co-edited with John Albinson, (1976). Dr Gruneau has also supervised more than 100 graduate students and continues to participate actively in global, national, and community discussions on sport, education, communication, politics, and social inequality.
