November 6 - 10 | 7:30 pm | University Theatre
Presented by the University of Lethbridge Department of Drama.
A comedic romp into the world of fantasy role-playing games, She Kills Monsters by Qui Nguyen tells the story of Agnes Evans as she leaves her childhood home in Ohio following the death of her teenage sister, Tilly. When Agnes finds Tilly's Dungeons & Dragons notebook, however, she stumbles into a journey of discovery and action-packed adventure in the imaginary world that was Tilly's refuge. Playing Nov. 6 – 10 at 7:30 pm nightly on the University Theatre stage, the second Drama Mainstage of the season, She Kills Monsters is a transformative tale featuring demon queens, elves, heroes and creatures of all sizes!
“Dungeons and Dragons has a complex history and a long time reputation for being a ‘weirdo’ hobby for antisocial nerds,” says Lindsey Zess, director and instructor for the Department of Drama. “In my personal experience, playing the game is fun and attracts people from all walks of life. The play is an ode to the game, accessible to D&D fans and skeptics too.”
The production, featuring breath-taking costumes designed by Leslie Robison-Greene, and an expansive set designed by Lee Burckes transports audiences into the world of fantasy and make-believe. The incorporation of puppets and finely-detailed weaponry designed by Sarah Hilliard and Julia Wasilewski will keep audiences spell-bound throughout the entire performance.
“There are thirteen different kinds of monsters in the show, from zombies to succubus chearleaders to a five-headed fire-breathing dragon that fills the entire stage,” describes Zess. “The cast has been training tirelessly for weeks in different weapon styles as well and the fight scenes alone are worth the price of admission! It’s a very ambitious script, full of surprises.”
